Jampa Temple Consecration Festival

Group Festival Tour
Duration
: 9 nights / 10 days
Overview
Thuktro Tours presents two well-attended festivals of Bhutan: Paro
Tshechu in spring and Jampa Temple Consecration in late autumn/fall. The
two seasons are the best time to plan your vacations in Bhutan. As Bhutan
is a largely farming population, the two festivals are observed during the
leisure time before and after the farming cycle. Local devotees and
international guests converge at the two spectacular events like nowhere
else.
In late autumn on the cusp of winter (November – December), the scenic
Bumthang valley hosts the annual consecration ceremony of Jampa Temple
Consecration, one of the earliest Bon-Buddhist festivals of Bhutan
introduced by treasure discoverer Terton Dorji Lingpa (1346-1405) in the
14th century.
The 5-day festival features visionary dances composed by Dorji Lingpa and
the popular Tercham, an esoteric naked dance originally associated with
Nabi temple in southern Trongsa. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava
conjured up the magical dance to distract spirits and forces obstructing the
construction of the temple in the 8th century. In the 14th century, Dorji
Lingpa visited the landmark temple and introduced the dance at the
consecration ceremony of restored Jampa Temple in Bumthang.
Thuktro Tours has crafted this journey to celebrate the devotion of the
locals who have been zealously observing the festival uninterruptedly for
over 600 years. The 320 km road trip explores six scenic valleys of
